As customers, we are rendering ourselves powerless for as long as we accept the terms as imposed on us by corporates such as Core. The fact that you have to pay R 2500.00 for a whole keyboard in essentially replacing one key is extortionate, and something I will NEVER accept, not to mention a waste of energy in production and natural resources,. It is precisely the lack of action and acceptance of the status quo what will make you, me and the world we live in the ones to suffer time and time again, unless you start fighting back.

Bizarre Twitter stream that!

As an absolute Apple product fan, and having two fully kitted business running close to 25 Macs, and no less than 4 in my house too, you could say I've spent a lot of money on Apple products. From Mac Pros, to MBPs to my iPhone and even Final Cut and iWork.

But I have drawn the line and will no longer be purchasing any products locally and I started with Aperture just the other day. I was on a regular London trip and purchased it, didn't claim back the VAT (had no time) and even, shock horror, declared it with some other camera gear when I got to SA customs. I paid my VAT and have submitted the invoices to my accountant. And I saved R600.

I'm about to purchase a brand new 15" and 17" MBP, and guess what? No matter how much he argues in that Twitter stream, it's cheaper for me to pay in Pounds than buying one here, it would be cheaper in Dollars, but I'm only in New York again in January. Rest assured, at least I can get the spec I want, have it done in store and walk out a happy customer.

I'm looking forward to having a new MBP shortly. But everything, from our OSX Server upgrades to the latest copy of Aperture will now be bought abroad or shipped in. Even with UPS + duties + VAT it's cheaper, and wait for it: Quicker.

If I was one of the guys at Digicape (only Apple people I actually try to support if they have in what I want) I'd be tearing my hair out.

I handed my Powebook for service at Core in June 2007, after just over a year of limited use. The quote proved very expensive ( the motherboard had evidently gone), and after a long period of negotiating and trying to get the funds available, I had to throw in the towel. After two years of absence I collected the unit yesterday. To say that it was in a terrible state is an understatement. Screws were missing, the caps lock key was dislodged, and the touch pad was clearly dented and worn. Upon enquiry, I was told that they used my machine for spare parts, after no-one collected it. Surely private property, to the value of R20 0000 can't be used as spare parts without the owner's consent?! This is shocking behaviour from Core, who now leaves me with a mangled machine worth nothing, and the insinuation that it's my fault for not collecting it!

Its also clear that most of the kiddies (bloggers) complaining about Core prices don't understand the import business (duh!) - i.e. the complexity and risk associated with Fwd contracts especially on large orders. Lets see a clever kid here explain a forward contract to his mates.

Ask ANYONE that has had the misfortune of doing direct business with Core, these issues start right at the top and end up in their nice looking, but totally useless I-stores. Core's attitude towards Apple + Mac users is always the same, take it or leave it. Have you ever had someone there go the extra mile to get something slightly quicker or call you back when it finally arrives?? no chance. I also don't buy that Apple.com doesn't care, in these times I'm certain they do, they just haven't heard the full story. viva stopcore!!

[...] You don’t believe me? Check the prices of an Apple machine on any US based website and compare it to South Africa. Yes, we do need to remember import costs etc, but you do the math. I also found an interesting blog committed to bringing to light the monolopy Core holds over South Africa. Want to know how you can make a difference? [...]

You see Greg, the problem with Core is that there is no option as they are the SOLE distributors of hardware. Training is a great idea BUT with Core gripping the market like they do it's not worth doing training for the small amount of people that might require it. That said, if there was a market there would be a vibrant training and second hand community which we currently do not have.
